These responses reflect questions I’m most often asked by neighbours considering candidacy. For official or up-to-date requirements, please contact the Clerk of the Municipality of Central Elgin.

How much does it cost to run?

Costs vary depending on how you choose to campaign. Candidates pay a filing fee of $100 (or $200 for head of council), which is refunded after you submit your required financial statement.

Campaign spending itself can range widely. In 2022, successful candidates in Central Elgin reported expenses ranging from approximately $448 to $13,686. Not all winners were the highest spenders in their ward or position.

Campaigning does not require a large budget. Many candidates rely primarily on word of mouth, community conversations, and door-to-door outreach. Social media platforms are generally free to use, and personal engagement remains one of the most effective tools available.

What if I change my mind about the position I want to run for?

After filing your nomination papers, you can meet again with the Clerk to change which role you’re running for any time before 2:00 pm on Nomination Day. Once nominations are closed, you can no longer make changes.

Can I run in a ward I don’t live in?

Yes. Eligibility to run is based on municipality, not ward. If you live in one ward, but because of business, family, or other considerations, you feel better suited to another, you can select the one that feels right.
